Martha Stewart's Anti-fur Video

Martha Stewart is hosting and narrating one of the scariest videos I've seen in a while. Hostel and Wolf Creek have nothing on the shivers from her discussion of the fur industry.

I come from a heritage where my family lived off the land. Not for commerce, but to survive. Just a few weeks back we took out a fur coat my great-great aunt made 60 years ago. When those animals were hunted there was no grocery store. They ate the animal and made use of the pelt because they grew up wasting nothing. Though PETA wouldn't condone how I got my beliefs because they protest traditional hunting too, I think it is because I grew up in that culture that I'd never buy fur for fashion. But still, I figure if I joined PETA they'd probably kick me out.

A few days later I saw two sportsmen in a casino here. There was a convention in town. They were being greeted by two women in fur coats, and one was handing his wife/girlfriend a new one he'd picked up that day. She was oooing and aaahing about how lovely it was. I didn't see that one, but the one she was wearing a flea-bitten fox coat. Really mangy! I'm not really that confrontational, so I didn't say anything of course. But I really don't get the need to dress in furs and ooh an aah over them. It is just a status symbol I never found important.

For me, knowing the conditions that the aniamls, especially foxes, are forced to live in removes all the glamor and prestige.
