The word up at the Wired blog is that Guillermo del Toro who directed Hellboy, The Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth and other cool flicks is going to be a the helm of The Hobbit, produced by Peter Jackson's production company.
That sounds like a good combination to me, and it's nice to hear the film is back on track after legal wrangling between New Line Cinema and Jackson.
In celebration Wired posts an old Leonard Nimoy performance of the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Though I know many J.R.R. Tolkien fans disavow it, I've always been fond of the Rankin and Bass animated version of The Hobbit and in particular the main title theme sung by folk great Glen Yarbrough.

I'm with you on the Rankin/Bass version (& the song.) I'm sure this latest movie will be stunning. That's the downside of CGI, I think. It used to be amazing. Now it's so common nothing particularly stands out anymore. I guess that's why "High-Def" was invented. Jeeze...I just can't keep up anymore.
(end meandering ramble)
I am soooo looking forward to this film!
I liked the old one, too. Should be interesting, this.
Cool. :) It ought to be good.
why is blogger putting up such complicated word scrambles today. I've tried posting three times and I can't get the damn word scramble right. And finally it erased my whole post.
Sorry about the problem, Charles. I turned that feature on because I used to get spam comments. Guess I could try it off for a while and see if that has come to an end. I have found it perplexing on a couple of sites that the algorithm delivers a letter combination you can't read.
I don't know about this. It feels like the milking of a franchise. I think The Hobbit is a wonderful story, but it's not Lord of the Rings. It doesn't have the depth, the majesty, or the richness of characterization. I think people will go in expecting more and instead will have to receive Lord-of-the-Rings-Lite. If Del Toro wants to take on a project, let him take on "At The Mountains Of Madness" by Lovecraft.
I suppose that would be an interesting Del Toro project. Maybe next.
It seems like the words have gotten suddenly more difficult too. Not sure why.
Ironically, the branch of the library I work at rec'd the R/B version of "The Hobbit" just yesterday. Life is so strange that way!
