Behind the Scenes - Ben Stiller The Heartbreak Kid

Here are some shots from my visit to the set of The Heartbreak Kid while they were on location last fall in San Francisco.

You can see Ben Stiller here and Malin Akerman is near the wall talking to a crew member.

I believe it was an architect's office or law office that was redressed to look like a florist's shop.

Below is a a broader view of the set-up.

Now, by "behind-the-scenes" set visit, I mean, I was riding by on a street car I'd hopped around Fisherman's Wharf and we passed the location headed back down to a stop closer to my hotel.

You can see Malin Akerman--no kin to Forry I'm sure; it's spelled differently--crossing the street. Click for a larger view.

Very very kewel. Excellent. I'm not a big Ben fan, but I do want to see this.

Now come on, Sid. We all know you were the uncredited writer on the original script for this movie. I'm sorry they cut your scene where Ben Stiller is chased into the Cacti room and slowly spined to death. And I liked your title better too, "Hell comes to Heartbreak." I do hope you got paid at least.

I remember the original. I believe it starred Charles Grodin in the Ben Stiller role, Cybill Shepherd as the unattainable Goddess, and Eddie Albert as her father. The film was based on a story by Neil Simon and directed by Elaine May.

The original was a brilliant work. It was mired in sixties angst and would have made a perfect double feature with "The Graduate". It is a story about a shallow young man who wants something because he can't have it, and the pursuit is everything.

This remake, directed by the Farrelly brothers has all the promise of borscht. Don't get me wrong, I adored "There's Something About Mary", "Dumb and Dumber", "Shallow Hal" and "Stuck on You". However, this bittersweet story deserves a subtle approach, a soulful multifaceted approach that brings forth character.

What's next? Seth Rogan as Benjamin Braddock in an updated version of "The Graduate"? I can just see the trailer...

"Look who's banging Mrs. Robinson!!!"
