The My Garden Sandwich

Temperatures have been unseasonably warm which--along with a late planting of cucumbers--has kept my garden going longer than I expected.

I've been enjoying a veggie-heavy sandwich enhanced with available ingredients, and I've been pretty pleased with the flavor.

On a sub roll, I've been using:

  • Cucumber slices
  • Orange bell pepper (though I will soon use red because that's what's just ripened)
  • Clippings from Territorial Seed Company's Micro Greens salad assortment (slightly cooler temps seem to have killed whatever was eating them)
  • Tomato (from my grocer's produce section, the tomato plants gave out already)
  • Veggie cheese, American or Swiss (ditto-grocer. I don't know how to make it.)
  • Vegenaise® - from the health food store and very, very good.
  • Sliced turkey
I have done the sandwich without the meat and found it to be just fine as well.

I hope it's healthier than average, and it does have the spiritual benefit of being grown as the result of my own effort.

I wouldn't be suprised to find that you're becoming a survivalist these days, Sid. YOu aren't digging a fallout shelter are you? If so I want to come see you in case of war.

Home-grown cucumbers taste so much better than the store-bought kind, but I haven't had much success growing them. I envy you your sandwich.

My friend Jon says writers should always mention food in their work. The more food mentioned the better. Is it possible that you're starting along this treacherous route?

Well, I am going to have to do something with the space where my garden is when it really gets cold, Charles.

Shauna, they are good - I thought the plants were never going to produce, but they have proven quite prolific.

Stewart, I've heard that's an important way of evoking feelings in the reader. Apparently Ian Fleming though Bond's meals were an important part of the story and believed bacon and eggs with black coffee was the perfect breakfast for Bond. Read that in the old Bond fan club newsletter sometime in the last millennium.

Cukes are better than nukes. Seriously, fresh cucumber is a real treat. Cheers and -- cool on the Bond, whch makes perfect sense. All the HBO shows involve a lot of food gatherings, which now makes even better sense ;)

I wish I had enough sun for a garden. I can barely manage to eke out enough light for my pale, leggy herbs.

That sandwich looks like the bomb.

How very awesome of you! Keep up the good gardening!
I've planted ice cream, myself, but no luck yet. Maybe it'll come up next year. ;)

Maybe when it gets cold, Lana.

Just great, now I'm hungry. There goes my diet.

I have a severe case of garden envy right now.
